How it begins

Long ago, the people of Israel lived in Egypt, in the land of Goshen. They had once been guests. Now they were slaves. Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, made them build his store cities, Pithom and Raamses. Every day they dug mud, mixed it with straw, and pressed it into bricks. Thousands of bricks. Your child's name carries the straw. Up and down the rows, all day, in the heat. The taskmasters count every brick. A family that falls short of its count is punished. But the people of Israel had not been forgotten. God had made a promise to their fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, long before.

Asher is the oldest brickmaker in the yard. His hands shake now. "I'm short," he whispers. "Ten bricks short, and the sun is going down." The taskmaster is walking down the row, counting. Your child's name has a pile of bricks too, nearly finished. If your child's name helps Asher, your child's name's own pile may come up short.
